Make sure to scroll to the very bottom so that you don’t miss out on our list of favorite stocking stuffers as well!

A fastpitch softball player’s glasses take a beating so rest assured any player would be happy with a new pair of sunglasses. Also makes a great stocking stuffer!

AKASO Brave 4 4K 20MP WiFi Action Camera Ultra HD with EIS 30m Underwater Waterproof Camera Remote Control 5X Zoom Underwater Camcorder with 2 Batteries and Helmet Accessories Kit
Action cameras are all the rage right now, however there are so many options and many of them a sub-par cameras. That isn’t true of the Akaso. After our team going through two other non Go-Pro action cameras we finally found this one and have been happy ever since. Let your players use them for fun, or if they want mount them to a fence and let her be able to go back an relive her highlights (or errors) in games played.

If rolling bags aren’t favored by the softball player in your life, then we highly recommend the Voodoo Rebirth Backpack. One of the highest rated bags out there and for good reason. It provides room enough for 2 bats, helmet, shoes and even a fleece lined pocket for her phone and valuables. If your player does a lot of practice at home then this makes a great training ball that won’t go far which especially useful when space is limited. Bright colored so as not to lose them and surprisingly durable for the soft-ish feel on these balls. They are unlike any practice ball we’ve ever used and we love them!

The Hitting Vault (Pro)
Probably one of the most valuable gifts we’re recommending in this list. If your player truly immerses herself into The Hitting Vault program then she will more than likely improve her batting considerably! Put out by the amazing Coach Lisle and if you’re not familiar with that name then here’s some info on him(Coach Lisle). For just a single player the Pro version will be exactly what you’re looking for. Also, if you have any questions they are very responsive on facebook with answering any questions you may have.

Best Softball Bats For 8U Girls

When girls hit the 7, 8 and 9 year old range they can really start benefiting from a decent bat. With all the options on the market, how is one to know what bat is better than the rest? We here at SoftballGalaxy.com have decided to narrow down the field a bit for you.

Just to make it clear, we firmly believe that the best way to find the right bat is by swinging it. If your interested in a bat you see on here, try and find somewhere local to demo the bat before purchasing it.

When buying your 8U daughter a new bat, you first need to decide what size and type of bat she should be swinging.  There are a few things you need to consider when looking for the right softball bat.

-Length
-Weight
-League Association
-Bat Type (Material)
-Length

When buying a bat, if you get a bat that is too long it can sometimes be very difficult for your child to swing. On the opposite end, you don’t want a bat that is too short for your child either. A good rule of thumb to remember is that a child under 60 pounds will usually do best with a bat between 26″-29″ and a child over 60 pounds will do best with a bat between 28″-32″. For a child just starting out, if they are in the 3′-3’4″ height range then 26″ is a good starting length for their first bat. For every 4-5″ that they grow, you should add 1″ to their bat length.

Weight

After you have figured out the proper length bat for you child, the next thing you should consider is weight of the bat. A bat that is too heavy will cause a much slower “draggy” swing with poor control that results in bad contact or all out strikes. When looking at bats, you will notice that many bats won’t show the actual weight but instead will show the drop weight. The drop weight is the difference between the length of the bat and the weight of the bat. In other words LENGTH – WEIGHT = DROP WEIGHT. For example, a bat that is 27″ and a weight of 17oz would have a drop weight of -10. For 6U and 8U players you will most likely be looking at bats with a (-13.5)-(-10) drop with the consideration that their bat is between 24″-29″.

League Association

Every league has their own rules regarding what is and isn’t allowed pertaining to equipment. When it comes to bats, the manufacturer stamps the bats with the logo of whatever certification that bat has. If you’re not sure if the bat you’re looking at is approved for your league then you should check with the coaches or read the league’s rule book to make sure the bat you are considering is allowed before purchasing it.

Bat Type (Material)

There are 3 main types of softball bats, when it comes to the material they are made out of. Alloy bats, Composite bats and Hybrids bats which are basically a mix of the two with the handle being composite and the barrels being alloy. Here we will show a few pros and cons of each material to help you decide which bat will work best for your child.

-Alloy Pros
Usually much less expensive than composite bats
Ready to use at purchase, no break in required
Often outlasts a composite bat since they usually don’t crack (instead they dent). A composite bat is unusable once cracked.

-Alloy Cons
Alloy usually has a smaller sweet spot and less pop than a composite bat

-Composite Pros
Less sting on your hands from mis-hit balls due to the reduced vibration in these bats
Larger sweet spot and more pop than an alloy bat

-Composite Cons
Bats require a break-in period
More expensive than alloy bats

– Hybrid Pros
Usually cost less than a full composite bat
No break in period
Less sting and vibration due to the composite handle
Longer barrel life than a composite (due to the barrel end being alloy)

-Hybrid Cons
Costs more than a full alloy bat
Handle can be susceptible to cracking

Below you will find our 5 favorite bats for the 8U age group.  In the end one of the main decision makers should be your daughter. What bat does she like? What feels good to her? What bat looks the best to her? If she walks up to the plate with confidence that the bat she carries is going to help her get a great hit, then it just may do that. She may not need any of these bats below. Let her swing her friend’s bats and see which one feels good to her. Bring her to the sporting goods store and let her swing some. Ultimately, she should be the big deciding factor in which bat she ends up with.

1. Demarini Bustos

The Demarini Bustos is great 2 piece bat put out by one of the best bat companies in the market. One great thing about this bat is you’re not going to break the bank for a bat that has a proven track record. The Bustos shows up in a lot of kids bat bags for the reason that they just love these very light drop 13 bats that get the job done! Another plus is that with the composite handle there should be less sting at contact, and we all know how important that can be to some of these little ones!

2. Dudley Lightning Lift (not to be confused with the Dudley Lightning Lite)

The Dudley Lightning Lift showed up on our very own doorstep this spring, and boy have we loved it so far! The Lightning Lift is another drop 13 bat (so extremely light), however unlike the Bustos the Lightning Lift is 100% composite. With an XL Sweetspot paired with the lightness of the full composite bat you get an amazing bat at a price point much lower than the other full composite bats that made our list.

3. Mizuno Jennie Finch

The Mizuno Jennie Finch is what we would consider the budget bat of the bunch. It’s a one piece MZ 2200+ alloy design in -13 drop. You can scour forums and message boards and see that many parents swear by this bat. We would not hesitate to recommend this bat to someone not quite ready to spend $100 or more on a new bat. Now you can use all the money you saved for very valuable batting lessons instead!

4. Demarini CFX

If you’ve ever been to any 8U tournament it’s almost guaranteed you have seen the CFX being used. It’s truly one of our favorite bats here at SoftballGalaxy.com. If you have a daughter with a great swing and you seriously want to get the best out of her efforts, then look no further than the CFX. The pop, the balance, the durability…what more could you ask for. We HIGHLY recommend this bat to the girls that take softball seriously.

5.  Louisville Slugger LXT

The Louisville Slugger LXT seems to be the best alternative to Demarini’s CFX if you’re looking for a high end 8U 100% composite bat. This is one of the other bat’s you will definitely see around 8U softball tournaments and for good reasons. The LXT is an extremely balanced bat that comes pretty hot out of the wrapper.  In our opinion it’s not the “prettiest” bat out there.  One of our daughters actually avoided this bat due to the fact she didn’t like the way it looks.  Does that mean less performance?  Absolutely not, but remember…they are the ones carrying it to the plate under pressure and if they don’t feel 100% happy with their bat then it could actually affect their outcome.  Despite that, this bat is still one amazing bat.

The Best List Of Youth Appropriate Fastpitch Softball Team Names

Youth Fastpitch Softball Best Team Name

“The name on the front of the uniform is more important than the name on the back”

We’ve probably seen this softball quote shared on social media at some point.  These are VERY true words.  But what happens if you still don’t have any idea what name to put on the front of that fastpitch softball uniform?  It just so happens we can help!  We have painstakingly done much research and even went to the trouble of alphabetically listing our favorite team names that works for any youth fastpitch softball team! (ok…so it wasn’t painstakingly….we actually had fun doing this!).

When reading through this list don’t forget to add your city name, county name, or even works like “lady” or “the” in front of these names to mix it up a little.  Sometimes you might just end up finding the perfect team name with that little twist.

How To Get That Expensive Fastpitch Bat At A Cheap Price

Girl Swinging Fastpitch Softball Bat

We all would just love to be able to go out and buy the newest model Demarini or Louisville Sluggers fastpitch softball bat, but good Lord have you seen the prices? It’s a car note for some of these hot sticks! Here at SoftballGalaxy.com we understand your pain and can give you some tips and tricks on how to get one of the best quality bats and not break the bank in the process. Next time you’re in the market for another softball bat make sure you consider using some of these ideas and save yourself a few bucks (and also avoid having to spend a few weeks regretting dropping the big bucks for a brand new model).

Buy the last years model
If you don’t want to buy used then this is the best way to get a great deal on a new bat. When a new model of a bat comes out just wait a bit before you jump on it and instead look for the previous years models to take a big drop in price. Go ahead and join the email newsletters for some of these bat companies (Demarini, Louisville Slugger, Worth etc) and you can usually be one of the first to know about these great deals before or as they are happening. As an example, in a recent event Louisville Slugger and Demarini both dropped many of their previous models by up to 50% in a one day only sale when their newest models came out. Some people got some amazing deals from this! Another useful tip is to join these bat companies social media accounts like Facebook and watch for these deals to pop up as well. There are only limited quantities on these bats so you have to act fast because they move quick.

Join mailing lists and social media accounts for bat companies
As mentioned in the last tip, you can come across some good deals by just being informed of the latest news from these companies. It’s doubtful that you will get as good of a deal as buying the last years models, but you can still get in on sales or special discounts just by keeping in touch with these companies.

Don’t be scared to buy used
Many players just have to have the newest model of a bat out and end up getting rid of their current bat that still ends up having lots of life left in it.  There are many places where these bats end up and I could go on and on listing places to search these out but for the sake of time I will only list the top places to look first.

  • Softball Bat Websites – When you’re in the market for a softball bat, a good spot to hit up are websites specific to selling bats at a discount. A few that come to mind are JustBats.com, Sidelineswap.com, CheapBats.com, and CloseoutBats.com. Many of these sites also contain some good nuggets of information on how to pick just the right bat for you so that’s a plus as well. These sites also have mailing lists and sometimes do specials and sales that can even get you a few more dollars off on your purchase so it’s a good idea to join up to these lists. I also always make sure to search google for the name of the site and add “coupon code” to it and you can sometimes snag an extra discount code by doing this. Chrome extensions like Honey will also help you with this by automatically inserting coupon codes at checkout to see if anything works.
  • Ebay – The last bat I purchased for my daughter came off of Ebay and I was very happy with what we got and the price we paid. I feel comfortable buying from Ebay due to the fact that out of every issue I’ve ever had (and I buy a lot for my personal business), I have basically never had a real problem if I didn’t get the exact product I was expecting and returning and refunding has usually been a pretty simple process. Make sure to study the pictures well and look for sellers with good ratings that accept returns (although if the product doesn’t match the description you can still return under Ebay’s money back guarantee). When searching for a bat on Ebay, if you are wanting a used bat make sure to filter out the new bats.  It makes going through the results so much quicker.  Remember, you can also put alerts for certain keywords and Ebay will notify you when a new listing comes up for that specific keyword. If you decide to purchase a bat off of Ebay make sure to join up at Topcashback.com to get a little bit of cashback rewards as well when you click through their link!
  • Facebook Marketplace/Groups – If you haven’t used Facebook Marketplace yet, you really should try it out. You can search locally for a softball bat and filter down to specific distances away from you or prices. You can also get Facebook Marketplace to notify you when certain listings match keywords that you have saved.  As of now (10/2018) I still feel their marketplace has some issues that need to be worked out, however don’t let it stop you from searching here. Also on Facebook, look for fastpitch softball buy and sell groups that may or may not be near you. It doesn’t necessarily have to be near you as many people are willing to ship for a bit extra, but nothing beats being able to put the bat in your hands before you buy it vs having a bat shipped to you from an unknown person.
  • Buy/Sell Phone Apps – It seems like every time I turn around there is a new app for buying and selling on your phone. They don’t seem to get quite as much traffic as Ebay, but many sellers are willing to sell on these apps due to the low fees as opposed to Ebay’s higher fees. I personally like Mercari the most out of all of these apps, but I think there’s a chance to find a bat on any of these to be honest. Here are a few of the more popular ones to consider. Mercari, Offer Up, Letgo, Varage Sale, Oodle, Craigslist and 5miles.
  • Play It Again Sports – Play It Again Sports is a great store for finding gently used sporting equipment.  If you don’t have one near you, you can still go to Facebook and search for “Play It Again Sports” and you will get many results of their stores from all around the U.S. I have actually instant messaged many of these stores separately looking for a specific fastpitch softball bat. Even though no one had it, it’s still a great place to look when you’re wanting a specific model and most Play It Again Sports told me they are willing to ship.
  • Word Of Mouth – Every player at some point is most likely going to outgrow their current bat.  Some players or parents just set the bat in the closet and forget about it.  It never hurts to ask the coaches, parents and players if they have any bats they want to get rid of at a deal.  You would be surprised at the low price someone may give you on a good bat that they basically forgot they even owned til you mentioned it.  You can also post on your personal Facebook page that you’re in need of a specific bat to get the word out to your friends.
  • Thrift Stores/Goodwill/Salvation Army – This is a very hit or miss (no pun intended) place to look for fastpitch softball bats. Most bats that you find in these types of stores are ancient, cheap aluminum bats that you couldn’t pay someone to take, HOWEVER I have heard tales of very high quality bats being purchased for as little as $5.00! It’s a gamble, but you never know what you may find once inside these stores so it’s worth a shot.  Your best bet to find these types of stores is to pull up Google Maps and type in “thrift store” and you should get all the results near you.

Tip – When buying used make sure to ask if the bat has been modified in any way as that would make the bat illegal.  Most often it’s not, but it’s always safest to ask first.

Now that we have given you a few ideas on places to search for bats, go ahead and give one…or all a try! You may be surprised at what you end up finding. Oh, and don’t forget that if you have a bat (or any equipment for that matter) that is no longer in use then list it on one of the marketplaces mentioned above and use that money toward your next bat purchase! Good luck!

One last tip. We do not recommend using credit cards for everyone so if you’re not comfortable with the thought of having a credit card please avoid using them.  IF (and only if) you are a credit card user already and understand the risks associated with them then don’t forget to use a cashback credit card if you make an online purchase.  Our favorite one is the Citi Double Cash Back card that gives us 2% on purchases, however there are many other cards that do cashback as well.  This paired with promo codes, coupons, and sites like TopCashback.com can help pull the price down when you go to purchase that next fastpitch softball bat.

How To Practice Softball Alone: One Person Drills

Softball Girl

While a majority of what you learn through your softball years will be on a field, in front of coaches and teammates or at workshops, let’s not underestimate the results you can achieve from practicing on your own.  To get better at the game of softball, you will want to continually try to improve every aspect of your game no matter your current situation.  We’ve decided to come up with our shortlist of drill/practices that you can do when no one else is around to help you out.  Work on some (or all) of these and watch your skills improve over time.

Swing Practice
What do you need: Bat
Optional: Video Camera
This one is quite simple. Get into your normal stance and once there practice your bat swing. You’re not looking for QUANTITY, but instead shoot for QUALITY. It’s much better for you to do 25 great swings than 150 bad swings. During this drill, slow it down at times. Focus on all of your body mechanics during this and eventually you will start feeling a more repeatable, stronger swing if you continue to work on this. Look for areas you can improve on during this drill. Try to think of anything your coaches have been wanting you to work on during your swing and work on that. For a little extra bonus you can videotape yourself and watch it in slow motion to spot any swing issues.

Hand Drill/Fielding
What do you need: Tennis Ball, Hard Wall
This is another very simple, yet effective drill. You just throw the ball hard up against the wall and catch it on the return. You can move closer to the wall to make it more difficult, and also make sure your throwing at different spots on the wall to get the ball to return in different areas. Do everything you can to stop the ball from getting by you. In return you will be more prepared to stop those fast line drives out in the real games.

Sprinting
What do you need: Area to sprint
Optional: Stopwatch (or stopwatch app on phone) (MARATHON Adanac 3000 Digital Sports Stopwatch Timer)
In both hitting and fielding, you must be prepared to sprint. Many players don’t really think about running as something you have to practice, however it is well worth it. How many times have you seen an out take place where you mutter to yourself “If she had been a little faster, she would have been safe”. It happens quite often that mere seconds are the difference between an out or being safe. A good little tip is, since baselines in softball are 60 feet in distance, this makes it a good starting distance for sprinting. If you want to try to best yourself, set up a specific distance and use a stopwatch to time your sprints. You will be delighted to see your times get quicker with continual practice on your sprinting.

Pitching #1
What do you need: Concrete or other (preferably outdoor)strong wall, Tape (not clear), Softball
Optional: Net (replaces wall/tape) (Easton XLP Net)
As a pitcher you want to be able to hit the strike-zone at will. This, of course is only going to come with practice. If you don’t have a net to catch the ball, don’t worry. A strong wall and some tape that you can use to mark a strike zone will work just fine (don’t use an inside wall or you’ll be finding a repair man to fix the hole you put into it!). Do your best to repeatedly hit the strike zone with every pitch. Can you hit different parts of the strike zone? If not work on that. Remember, practice doesn’t make perfect but it does make progress. If you can get a net for this it makes it an even better option as many of the hitting nets come with strike zone markers that can be used to throw into as well. Not only will this drill help with pitch placement, but you should also get a little added benefit of some amounts of gain of arm strength as well if done often.

Pitching #2
What do you need: Balled up socks, Mirror, hallway or wide room, tape (not clear)
This is a bit of a twist on the pitching drill we just mentioned. With this you can be inside (think rainy days) and get in a very simple, yet effective practice. All you have to do is to ball up a sock(s) for pitching, place the mirror at the end of a hall or wide room and then mark a line of tape from you to the middle of the bottom of the mirror. You can then take the tape and mark a “strike zone” on the actual mirror as well. Practice pitching slow or fast into the mirror and watch your form during the session. Once again think back to any tips your coaches have given you during your pitch and make sure that you are able to see yourself doing this while practicing.

Situational Awareness
What do you need: Cellphone capable of running Softball BasIQs app (free) Download here for iphone OR Download here for android.
So we came across this neat little app recently as Softball Galaxy, and upon first review it seems to be a pretty decent little app for helping you decide what to do during certain plays. Pick your position and once loaded up it will put you into specific situations where you choose what to do and the app will help you decide why you did or didn’t pick the right response to the situation. Although there seems to be a few issues with connecting through our Facebook accounts, once signed in through email we didn’t have any more issues and actually enjoyed this type of app.

The Best Softball Cheers And Softball Chants

Softball Cheers

We all have heard the many (often silly) softball cheers and chants floating around the ballpark during games and tournaments.  They are catchy, they are fun, and honestly you may have found yourself joining in whether your on the team or not.  The cheers and chants are a mental weapon that can be used to bring a team together, give a player confidence, or get under the skin of the opposing team, so needless to say they can be used as a tool to help your team get the big W.

Instead of searching all over for new softball cheers or chants, we at SoftballGalaxy.com have decided to save you the trouble and get the best cheers and chants you will ever need for your softball team all in one spot.  Enjoy!
